‘Learn and Build’ workshops

A partir d’octobre 2019, nous construirons quelques habitations simples à base de terre et de bambou sur notre nouveau terrain. Aussi, nous proposons des stages de deux semaines pour des personnes intéressées de comprendre par la pratique plutôt que la théorie. Nous travaillerons sur les principaux aspects, précédés chaque fois par une ou deux heures de cours: fondations écologiques, murs porteur en terre ou structure porteuse en bambou, toiture et couverture, enduit terre. L’objectif n’est pas de terminer le projet en deux semaines, mais de donner l’opportunité de pratiquer et d’apprendre. Ces stages, détaillés ci-dessous, sont en anglais et sont ouverts aux débutants comme aux personnes avec de l’expérience.

Quelle est la différence entre les stages ordinaires et les stages “Learn and Build ’?

Les stages classiques (exemple: ‘Earth Building in Practise’) associent théorie et pratique, et sont plutôt destinés aux personnes voulant connaître des points essentiels à la conception d’une maison écologique garantissant confort thermique, économie d’énergie et d’argent et durabilité (refroidissement/chauffage passif, l’isolation, orientation, éléments environnants etc). Ils incluent la pratique de techniques sur des murs tests et durent moins d’une semaine.

BUILD THE NEW SALA

Dates: 10-20 October 2019 (15th: day off)

During this 11 days workshop, we will build a round-shape earth and bamboo building (8 meter in diameter) by yourself using earth, sand, straw, wood, stones, and gravel. You will practise several steps with the other participants, under the trainer’s guidance:

  • Assembling the bamboo structure and roof (4 days)
  • Starting to make earth walls (Cob, Wattle and Daub) (2 days)
  • Starting to cover the roof with thatch (2 day)
  • Building an eco-friendly foundation for another building (2 days)

Explanations and information will be taught before each step (1 or 2 hours).

Fee: 10,600 baht/person (approximately 305 euros, 340 USD) including instruction, accommodation, all meals during the workshop, pick-up and drop-off at the Chiang Rai airport or bus terminals.

BUILD A YURT OUT OF BAMBOO AND EARTH

Dates: 18 – 28 November 2019 (23rd: day off)

You will start this 11 days workshop by building a ‘flex-yurt’, normally designed to be foldable and transportable. As we want to use it as a permanent building, we will cover the walls with earth. You will use only ropes and natural materials: bamboo, earth, sand, straw and rice husk. You will practise several steps with the other participants, under the trainer’s guidance:

  • Assembling the bamboo ‘flex-yurt’ (5 days)
  • Making the door and windows frames (1 day)
  • Starting to make earth walls (Wattle and Daub) (2 days)
  • Starting to cover the roof with thatch (2 days)

Explanations and information will be taught before each step (1 or 2 hours).

Fee: 10,600 baht/person (approximately 305 euros, 340 USD) including instruction, accommodation, all meals during the workshop, pick-up and drop-off at the Chiang Rai airport or bus terminals.

BUILD A ADOBE & COB HOUSE

Dates: 15-25 February 2020 (20th: day off)

This 11 days workshop will help you to build a round-shape earth building by yourself by using two techniques: Adobe (earth bricks) and Cob. The load-bearing walls will support a green roof. You will practise several steps with the other participants, under the trainer’s guidance:

  • Making cob walls (4 days)
  • Making earth bricks (Adobe) (2 days)
  • Laying Adobe bricks (1 day)
  • Doors and windows (1 day)
  • Plastering walls (1 day)
  • Plastering walls (finishing coat) on another building (1 day)

Explanations and information will be taught before each step (1 or 2 hours).

General information

The ‘Learn and Build’ workshops will be held at our centre, 25 kms south of Chiang Rai, and will have a maximum of 6 participants.

Trainer: Alain Madec, natural builder and founder of ‘Baan Din Doi’.

Schedule:  8.30 to 18.00 with several breaks; Lunch break: 12.00 to 14.00

We will make efforts to avoid working during hot hours, and – most of the time – work in the shade, and often have breaks.

Living situation

We will provide you with:

  • a simple accommodation in a tent and a comfortable mattress (or a mattress and mosquito net in our dormitory)
  • an area with hammocks and mats to relax in the shade
  • an area to play volley-ball or badminton

Wifi and 220 V electricity are available.

All meals will be vegetarian food with some meat and fish options.

We ask all participants to refrain from any illegal drug use or excessive drinking in our centre.
